The Granite House includes a separate Barn-Tavern, fire pit and three patios with beautiful grounds and next to Jordan Brook, all set in a historic Connecticut Village near the sea. Built in 1877, the Granite House is a private house set on 8.4 acres of grandeur in the historic Jordan Village portion of Waterford, Connecticut. The house boasts three bedrooms (2 King, 1 Queen bed) and a large third floor sleeping area (3 Queen beds),. The main house has three bathrooms, along with a gourmet kitchen and formal dining room. The house also has a great sunroom looking out at the Jordan Brook, the Barn-Tavern and the fire pit and grounds. Aside from the main house is the property's very own Barn-Tavern complete with an antique copper topped bar from London, England and comfortable couches, bar stools and chairs.
This site offers beautiful grounds with three patios, a huge granite fire pit, as well as historic architecture which sets a perfect scene for your photographic memories. Imagine a family reunion, graduation, celebration dinner, or an extravagant getaway. The Barn-Tavern can accommodate up to 30 guests. The main house can accommodate up to 24 seated dinner guests and 12 over-night guests.
In an August 5th, 2015 article, USA Today chose the Granite House as one of 50 best vacation rentals in the United States. The Granite House was featured in the Spring/Summer 2017 Edition of CT Bride as a great historic property for brides and their families to stay in the comfort of a grand home. history
The Granite House was built in 1877 by Phillip M. Powers using locally quarried granite. 1877 is carved into the granite lintel atop the third floor window. The dining room/kitchen wing of the house was originally built in 1700s, and then was reconstructed to the building configuration of 1877. The hand cut granite fireplace hearth from the original 1700s house on the property was utilized for the center of the fire pit by the Barn-Tavern building. Graniteville provided the Ashlar cut granite blocks for the Granite House, which is a very time consuming type of construction. The angular cut, 2 1/2' thick blocks are fitted together very tightly, rendering unusually straight architectural lines.
The Granite House is listed in the Historic Buildings of Connecticut archive, and is referred to as the Powers-Allyn-Rosenthal House, the namesake reflecting the three longest duration owners of the property. Beatrice Holt Rosenthal was the most famous owner, having served as both a delegate and a Committeewoman of the Democratic National party. Many political events and social gatherings were held over the years at the Granite House. Beatrice was famous for her beautiful gardens and rare trees that adorn the property.
the barn-tavern
The Barn-Tavern is a converted barn, having many great wood features, exterior, floors and walls all cut and milled wood from the property, consisting of very large white pines, maple, hickory and black walnut trees. There is a large deck with a huge pergola for barbecues, and great views of the property. The first floor ceiling is tin, with recessed LED lighting, adding to the ambiance.
One great feature of the Barn-Tavern is the original 1877 pantry from the Granite House galley kitchen. The pantry has the original doors with 15 old glass windows each, and all the original sand cast bronze hardware. It is now the centerpiece of this building. But, a Barn-Tavern also needs a great bar. The bar is of 1920s vintage from London, England, complete with a wonderful hand hammered copper top and side panels with a frame of traditional black lacquered wood. There are two leather couches, six nice leather bar stools and other seating for guests. The Barn-Tavern would be a great tasting room.

The Granite House at 75 Rope Ferry Road is located in the federally registered historic district of Jordan Village, which is part of Waterford, Connecticut. All utilities are new, with town water/sewer, AC, WiFi and TV in the Barn-Tavern. The property includes a newly renovated building to serve as a Barn-Tavern and general meeting place. The Granite House is situated on the easterly side of Jordan Village on 8.4 acres abutting Jordan Brook. Jordan Cove, an estuary off the ocean, terminates in the center of Jordan Village, with Jordan Brook flowing into the salt water cove.

The Granite House is located very close to major highways and trains, being just 4 miles off of exit 75 I-95, and just 6 miles from the Amtrak station in New London, CT. Travel time from NYC is roughly two hours, and one and a half hours from Boston. Moreover, the house is situated just 6 miles from the ferries that travel daily to Block Island, Fishers Island and Orient Point. Mystic CT is 12 miles away as is Old Saybrook, both having many great restaurants, seaports and beaches. The Waterford town beach is only 2 miles from the Granite House, as is the Harkness Mansion and the Eugene O'Neil Theater. The historic downtown of New London is only 6 miles from the Granite House as well. Access to the Mohegan and Pequot (Foxwoods) Resorts and Casinos is 25 miles from the Granite House making the location easily accessible from Boston or New York. Moreover, the Granite House is very close to several Connecticut beaches, restaurants, casinos, wineries and many other tourist attractions.
